Quick answer: Indian AI founders raising their first ₹25 lakh to ₹5 crore have six sources to choose from: government grants, accelerators, individual angels, angel networks, micro-VCs and family offices. This page lists 81 of them. Every one has backed an AI startup or run an AI-focused programme since April 2025, and each entry shows the deal, the round size and how to reach them.
For larger rounds, see our Global AI and DeepTech VC Funds list.
Before you pitch anyone on this list, create your free Backrr startup profile so your deck, metrics and cap table are in one place.
Which source fits your stage
| Where you are | Start with |
|---|---|
| Idea, no company yet | Accelerators that back individuals (Antler, South Park Commons, Y Combinator), GENESIS EIR |
| Prototype, no revenue | State grants, 100X.VC, AJVC, angels |
| MVP with first users or pilots | Angel networks, micro-VCs, GENESIS Pilot |
| Paying customers, raising seed | Micro-VCs, family offices, MeitY SAMRIDH (matching) |
| Any stage, burning compute | Cloud and GPU credit programmes, IndiaAI compute portal |
If this is your first raise: read this first
Get two things done before your first pitch.
- DPIIT recognition. Most government schemes on this page ask for it.
- A cap table that is clean and current. Investors check both early.
Four terms you will hear in every conversation:
- Pre-seed: your first outside money, usually before steady revenue.
- Seed: the round that funds early product-market fit. In India it typically comes after real users or pilots.
- SAFE / iSAFE: you take money now, and it turns into shares at your next priced round. 100X.VC and Y Combinator use versions of this.
- Post-money valuation: what the company is worth right after the money comes in. Your dilution is the cheque divided by the post-money.
1. Angel investors backing AI startups (15)
These are individuals who joined a pre-seed or seed AI round since April 2025. They rarely publish an application route, so use Invite to Round on Backrr to bring them into your round, ideally alongside a warm intro from a founder they already backed.

Two things most AI founders get wrong here:
- The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme is not open. It was built to run from 2021 to 2025, and we could not confirm a 2026 call. Ignore guides that still say "apply now".
The IndiaAI compute portal cuts GPU costs, not your cap table. Published hourly rates (before GST) include:
- H100: ₹153 on demand, or ₹117 on a 12-month reservation
- A100 80GB: ₹135.9 on demand, or ₹81 on a 12-month reservation
- Subsidy: up to 40%, subject to IndiaAI approval.
- Eligibility: the regular track needs DPIIT recognition, plus either ₹50 lakh in revenue or ₹1 crore raised.
Our AI fundraising guide shows what that saving is worth in equity.
Worked example: stacking sources for a first round
Say a first-time AI founder raises in three steps. This is an illustrative example that ignores ESOP pools.
- A ₹50 lakh state grant. No equity given up.
- ₹1.5 crore from a micro-VC for 9%. This is AJVC's reported first-cheque structure.
- A ₹3 crore seed round from angels at a ₹15 crore pre-money valuation. Post-money is ₹18 crore, so the new investors own 3 ÷ 18 = 16.67%. Everyone else's stake shrinks by 15 ÷ 18.
| Holder | After step 2 | After step 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Founders | 91.00% | 75.83% |
| Micro-VC | 9.00% | 7.50% |
| Seed angels | n/a | 16.67% |
Now skip the grant and raise that ₹50 lakh in the seed round instead:
- Post-money becomes ₹18.5 crore.
- Founders end at 91 × 15 ÷ 18.5 = 73.78%.
The grant was worth about 2 percentage points of your company. Do that at every round and it adds up.
Backrr's Cap Table runs this math on your real shareholding. It shows current and fully diluted ownership after each round, so the number you quote your next investor is right.
Mistakes first-time AI founders make with this list
- Pitching family offices first. They rarely lead a first cheque. Come to them with an angel or micro-VC already in the round.
- Sending the same deck to everyone. A grant panel wants impact and milestones. An angel wants the founder and the problem. A micro-VC wants proof the product is more than a wrapper around someone else's model.
- Waiting on grants. Government calls take months. Apply in parallel with your equity raise, never before it.
- Missing the angel fund rule. Under SEBI's revised rules, a person connected to your company can't back you through their angel fund. They have to invest in their own name.
Backrr's Investor Network filters investors by type, sector and cheque size, and the Investor Pipeline tracks every conversation from first email to term sheet. Before the first email, the Fundability Report and Pitch Deck Analyzer show where an investor is likely to push back.
FAQ
How much can an AI startup raise at pre-seed in India?
Most pre-seed rounds on this list fall between ₹1 crore and ₹5 crore. Single angels and grants start at ₹10 to ₹25 lakh. Accelerators like Antler and Y Combinator go up to about ₹4.4 crore.
Which investors back first-time AI founders with no revenue?
Accelerators that back individuals do, including Antler, South Park Commons, Y Combinator and 100X.VC. So do pre-seed micro-VCs like AJVC and Eximius, and grant schemes like GENESIS EIR. Angel networks usually want at least an MVP.
Do I need DPIIT recognition to raise from angels?
No. Angels and micro-VCs don't require it. Most government schemes on this list do, and so do the IndiaAI compute subsidy and the tax benefits for startups.
Start with one list, not six
You don't need all 81 sources, only the 10 to 15 that fit your stage, sector and round size. Create your free Backrr profile to build that shortlist and invite them to your round.
